Getting ready

The useful preparation starts before you arrive. Get instructions from the clinic carrying out your treatment, and make sure you have time to ask anything you are unsure about.

Tell the practitioner your story

Discuss the area you want to treat, previous hair-removal experiences and the result you hope for. Share your medical history, medicines, skin conditions and recent sun exposure so the practitioner can assess suitability.

Bring a list of questions. If you are comparing packages, ask for the treatment boundaries and inclusions in writing before making a decision.

Check your preparation instructions

Alma’s patient checklist covers tanning, products on the skin, methods that remove hair from the root and a test patch. Your own clinic should give you a clear schedule for preparation.

  • Confirm whether a patch test is needed and how far in advance.
  • Ask when to shave and when to stop waxing, plucking or threading.
  • Explain any recent natural tan, sunbed use or self-tan.
  • Check which products to leave off the area on the day.
  • Tell the practitioner about tattoos in or near the area.

On the day

Allow time to review your plan and raise any changes since your assessment. Protective eyewear should be provided for treatment. Let your practitioner know if you feel uncomfortable or if anything is unclear.

Before leaving, make sure you understand your aftercare instructions, how to protect the area from the sun and who to contact with concerns. Arrange the next appointment according to your practitioner’s guidance.
